MOVING!

I figured if I wanted info about a town, the best course of action would be to talk to other mom's! My husband accepted a position at the Air Station, so we will be down soon. We are trying to sell our home in PA and find affordable housing there. Can anyone give some direction of places that are family friendly? I have been reading the online newspaper and see there are some crime waves going on in N. Beaufort County...where is that? Any advice on the area would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!
Beth

It really depends on your price point, but we've lived in Beaufort and now on Lady's Island and LI is hands down better, in my opinion. Cleaner, friendlier and all round more upscale than alot of areas in Beaufort. It all depends on what section of town your looking at though and it is a nice drive to the Air Station from here, but there's alot of folks on LI that do it every day. Try militarybyowner.com they have area rentals and dor sale by owners on there, there's also Bundy, Inc and Beaufort Rentals if you're looking at renting. If not, there's quite alot of good deals right now housing because of the slow market.

It's true that there have been a rash of shootings in the area lately (mostly in a depressed area called Burton, but there was one on Lady's Island as well) but that is really uncharacteristic of this area. I lived in downtown Beaufort for several years and absolutely loved it. It is gorgeous and friendly and if you can find a decent place to rent/buy, it's worth it.
I now live in Port Royal (specifically in a gated community called Picket Fences that is an easy drive to the base) and Port Royal has great homes in nice neighborhoods. I'd check it out. In my neighborhood (which is also very close to Parris Island) there are tons of military families. Good luck! ~ Robyn

Do not move to burton. That's actually where the air station is. Unless it's in habersham (pretty pricey) you'll want to stay away from burton. Ummm....I live over by parris island. I love it over here. Downtown port royal is a pretty nice community. Back in mossy oaks as well. And lady's island, off of sam's point rd has some quaint neighborhoods there too. good luck!!!

Hi there PAMOM!
My husband is from Erie, PA!! Go STEELERS! lol

You are likely here by now, but I just seen your blog and wanted to welcome you to Beaufort. Please note the blogs above. Burton is not the best area to live. Not horrible, but not good either. If you have elementary school, middle school age children, you REALLY will want the Mossy Oaks area. It is truly the best and very family oriented.
As far as the high schools, I would not over praise either...BUT with the option of two, you want Beaufort High School district. I have a son graduating there this year, one at Mossy Oaks Elem, and one at Beaufort Middle. I have had dealings with the Lady's Island school districts as well. Coosa Elem is a or shall I say..was a great school when my oldest went there. I can not speak for it at this point, being that I am no longer there. BUT will say that I was overly impressed with Mossy Oaks when we transferred to their district!
Be prepared, housing is exspensive here....unfortunately!! Best of luck!!
